In 1972, David Bowie released his groundbreaking album and alter ego The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, propelling the softly spoken Londoner into one of the world's biggest stars. Bowie was a new kind of superstar, pushing the boundaries musically, theatrically and sexually. His shows were "performances" involving elaborate stage sets and outrageous costumes, far more way-out than the traditional rock concerts of the time. A key passenger on this rock trip into the stratosphere was photographer Mick Rock, a fellow Londoner who bonded with Bowie artistically and personally and rapidly became part of the Bowie inner circle.
Before the era of the publicist carefully controlling access to the star, Rock was able to trail and photograph Bowie freely. Between 1972-1974, he became Bowie's official photographer, tirelessly shooting the androgynous star on- and offstage, including a number of formal and informal portraits for press, album jackets, and posters. This outstanding and limited edition photo archive gathers thousands of Rock's images, many of them published here for the very first time. From spectacular stage shots to intimate backstage portraits, it shows the many facets of the Bowie enigma: aloof and approachable, playful and serious, candid and contrived.
