Volume VI of the General History of the Caribbean looks at the ways historians have written the history of the region depending upon their methods of interpretation and differing styles of communicating their findings. The linguistic diversity of the region would require the ideal historian to be proficient in all its languages. However, since in general proficiency is limited to two or three languages at most, the inability of the historian to identify and interrogate relevant material scattered in a variety of depositories in the Caribbean, the US, Europe, Africa, India and China has affected the ways in which the history of the region has been written.
The chapters which discuss methodology are followed by studies of particular themes of historiography. The second half of the volume describes the writing of history in the individual territories, taking into account changes in society, economy and political structure.
The final part of Volume VI is a full and detailed bibliography which serves not only as a guide to the volume but also as an invaluable reference for the General History of the Caribbean as a whole.
