"On n'est pas dans le futurisme, mais dans un drame bourgeois ou un thriller atmosphérique"
What drove my desire to stage X was an intuitive sense that something interesting would emerge from Mamadou Mahmoud N'Dongo's reflection on one of the great pays in theater histor'y cannon- MEDEA. The title X suggests intersection and possibility, and the experience of directing it delivered on its promise. When Mahmoud revealed that the play was written for "all Medeas" an explosion of ideas and images came forth as if magically unlocked. His play stretches a beautiful canvas for the director to explore sex, violence, and how these forces can drive a person to commit the unspeakable. Audrey Rogulski's superb translation, possible only by someone with the heart of a dramatist and a mind of a philosopher, articulates these themes with sensitivity and precision. Through her and N'Dongo's extraordinary work this, or rather theses Medeas, will not live in the fixed and impermeable past, but in the vital present that makes up our contemporary reality.
